The leading causes of poor outcomes after subarachnoid hemorrhage include cerebral vasospasm and delayed cerebral ischemia. An imbalance between vasoconstrictors and vasodilators, neuronal mechanisms that regulate vascular tone, and endothelial proliferation contribute to the pathology after subarachnoid hemorrhage. Subarachnoid hemorrhage-induced vasospasm is a point of interest for researchers. Rabbits become the most suitable alternative species of choice in cerebral vasospasm research. Compared to bigger animals, such as monkeys, pigs, and dogs, rabbits are easy to handle, inexpensive, and docile in nature. Moreover, the rabbit size is adequate for angiography. To induce SAH in rabbits, various models had been introduced: • Blood injection into the cisterna magna • Blood injection into the prepontine cistern • Suprasellar cistern-shunting model • Puncturing middle cerebral artery and superior sagittal sinus This study aimed to summarize current methods of subarachnoid hemorrhage in rabbits. © 2023 Elsevier Inc.
