Disipline hâkim geleneksel söylem ışığında gerçekleştirilen incelemelerce göz ardı edilen sosyal inşa süreçleri, aktörlerin kendilerine ve birbirlerine yönelik kimlik algıları gibi düşünsel faktörlerin analizin merkezine yerleştirilmesi, MERCOSUR?un ortaya çıkışı ve Güney Amerika bütünleşmesinin hali hazırdaki şeklini alması hususunda birçok noktayı aydınlatacaktır. Böylesi bir yaklaşımın diğer bölgelerde gelişen bütünleşme yapıları ve eğilimlerine de odaklanması gelecekteki çalışmalarda bölgesel bütünleşme konusunun daha sağlam bir temele oturmasını sağlayacaktır. Bir bölgesel bütünleşme hareketinin gelişip derinleşmesinin ekonomi ve güvenlik gibi alanlarla sınırlı kalmamasına bağlı olduğu gerçeği, ancak çok çeşitli araçlara ve doğası gereği esnek bir yapıya sahip olan böyle bir yaklaşımla ortaya çıkacaktır. Özellikle Avrupa bütünleşmesinin önünde zor bir dönem durduğuna ilişkin görüşün gittikçe güç kazandığı bu günlerde bütünleşme hareketlerinin, analize materyal olmayan faktörleri dahil eden İnşacı bir perspektiften ele alınması, söz konusu bu hareketlerin geleceği ve yeni koşullara adaptasyonu konusunda öngörüde bulunabilmek adına oldukça önemli olacaktır..This study, basing on the case of MERCOSUR, aims at analyzing regional integration initiatives through a Constructivist prism. Placing certain ideational factors, such as social construction processes, the actors? attribution of identity to themselves and the others, which have been mostly disregarded by the studies grounded upon the conventional analytical frameworks of the IR discipline, at the center of the analysis would shed light on various points regarding the foundation of MERCOSUR and the present state of the South American integration movement as a whole. Moreover, the application of such an approach toward other regional integration processes would contribute to the strengthening of the ground upon which the future regional integration initiatives would be built. The fact that the development and the deepening of any regional integration movement depends on its success in not to be strictly limited to the economic concerns and the security considerations would be explained only through a Constructivist vision with its large explanatory tools and inherently flexible structure.
