Complications during pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium are one of the leading causes of death and disability among women of reproductive age in developing countries. There is a close relationship between the quality of reproductive health service delivery and the level of maternal mortality. The main purpose of pregnancy follow-up (prenatal care) is to give birth to a healthy baby without putting the mother at risk. High-quality prenatal care provides timely recognition of maternal and fetal complications and offers clinicians a chance for early intervention. The antenatal period includes the follow-up of the mother and fetus from pregnancy detection to delivery. Examination of pregnant women is done monthly and fetal growth is monitored. Pregnant women who are overweight, extremely thin, over 35 years old or extremely young, with high blood pressure, diabetes, HIV, cancer and autoimmune diseases, and multiple pregnancies are at high risk and should be followed more closely. Routine follow-ups take about 15 minutes. At each visit, the mother's weight and blood pressure are measured, and the overall health of the fetus, its size, heart rate, and position are reviewed. Fetal heart rate is a good indicator of fetal health and indicates whether there is fetal stress. During these controls, some screenings are also carried out according to risk factors. Ultrasound scans are also done during pregnancy follow-up. © 2022 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.en_US
