OBJECTIVE: In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the level of quality of life and the factors affecting the quality of life in patients who underwent breast surgery with the diagnosis of stage I-III breast cancer. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This descriptive cross-sectional study involves a total of 110 patients with stage I-III breast cancer, between the ages of 21 and 80 who had undergone either mastectomy or breast conserving surgery. The survey data were obtained between June 2020- August 2020. “The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-30)” was used for determination of the quality of life. RESULTS: Physical function, role performance, emotional state and social function scores were found to be significantly higher in patients who had breast-conserving surgical procedures. While no statistically significant difference was observed between the EORTC QLQ-30 scores of Stage-I and Stage-II patients, it was significantly lower in Stage-III patients compared to Stage-I and Stage-II patients. While physical function, which is one of the functional status criteria, decreased significantly in patients receiving chemotherapy, no significant difference was observed between role performance, cognitive function, emotional status and social function scores. CONCLUSIONS:The results of the current study revealed that patients with in the earlier stages and ones who underwent breast conserving surgery had a better quality of life.
